Beta testers

Thanks for taking this on. The beta is closed and small for now, and it grows in rounds. This page changes as we move on to new things, so it is worth a glance each time you play.

Roster
  • SM Sith Lord
  • TBD
Which frontend are you testing? Pick one and this page rewrites itself for it. Everything else is the same either way.

What we are looking at this round

Getting in and messing around. Load a world, walk about, put your stuff on the walls, make it play, take it fullscreen, and see what happens. If you used the original Anarchy Arcade, bringing your old library across is the other half.

There is no checklist and nothing you have to finish. Play with it the way you would if nobody was watching. What we want is the moments where it got in your way — the thing that was confusing, slow, ugly or simply broken.

Setting up

Two pieces. AArcade Core is the arcade itself: your library, the menus, the emulators, the players. A frontend is the game that gives it a world to stand in. You install both, and you launch the frontend.

AA: OpenJKDF2

It puts the arcade inside the engine of Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, and comes with worlds of its own. Unzip it wherever you like and run its exe.

AA: Source 64

It is the successor to the original Source engine mod, in a 64-bit Source world. If you played Anarchy Arcade before, this is the one that will feel like home. Run aasource64.exe.

Do not launch aacore.exe. That is AArcade Core on its own, with no world in it. The first time your frontend starts it may ask Locate AArcade Core — that is the one moment you go looking for aacore.exe. Point the box at it, hit Save, and you should not see the prompt again.

Bringing your old arcade over

If you have Anarchy Arcade on Steam, your items, models, maps and saved arcades can come across. In Options → Legacy, point it at your old library.db and press Import.

It only reads. Nothing in your old install is moved, changed or deleted, and the old Anarchy Arcade keeps working exactly as it did. If something did not come across, came across wrong, or took a strange amount of time, that is worth telling us about.

Getting something onto a wall

From the main menu, choose Play and pick a world. The worlds that ship with AA: OpenJKDF2 are Jedi Knight levels. The worlds that ship with AA: Source 64 are Source maps, and any legacy maps you imported turn up here too. Once you are in, this is the short version of the whole product:

  • Middle-click an empty bit of wall. That opens Create New Item, already aimed where you were looking.
  • Paste a YouTube link into it and spawn it. The video becomes an object hanging where you aimed.
  • Look at it and click on it — or press R — and it plays, on the wall, in the world.
  • Take it fullscreen when you want a proper look at it.

Then do it with something else. A film on your drive, a ROM, a website, a game you own. Dragging a file straight out of Explorer and dropping it into the world works too, and is the fastest way to make a mess.

Telling us what happened

The #dev channel of the AArcade Discord is the place. Rough is fine — what you were doing and what it did is plenty, and a screenshot helps. Anything that felt broken, confusing, slow or just wrong is worth a message, especially while you were getting set up or importing.

There is a Testers button on the main menu in-game, too. It shows the same round notes as this page and updates without a new build.

Special thanks

To all of the testers & contributors of the original versions of AArcade.
